Depict Research

Depict Research Videos
For this post, we had to go to a website named "Depict", a video platform where you can make 90 second short films for the world to watch. We had to choose 5 of our favourite short films and give a reason why we liked the film.

1 - https://www.depict.org/2011/wake/?category_request=picks
2 - https://www.depict.org/2013/cool-unicorn-bruv/?category_request=picks
3 - https://www.depict.org/2003/le-cheval-2-1/?category_request=picks
4 - https://www.depict.org/2009/a-tv-movie/?category_request=picks

1 - This short documentary named "wake" was taken during a party and has an old lady play a very edgy grandma where she describes her smoking addition and also shows us a journal of her sky diving at a very old age. The camera work mainly consists of eye-level shots with a few other shots (dutch angle, medium shot). The lighting in this short film uses the natural light shining into the house and tent. The editing is very basic with only jump cuts throughout the short film. The theme is set in today's day and age that has a pretty dark tone but is brought up by the grandma being a very funny person. The reason I really like this film is how the grandma is still enjoying her life no matter the age.

2 - The second short documentary named "cool unicorn bruv" has 3 protagonists discussing how cool it is to have a "unicorn". The camera work has eye-level shots that cuts to each protagonist talking. The sound just consists of dialogue with no sound effects added. The lighting uses natural light with a dark shade at the end. The genre is more of a comedy where the characters talk in a very serious tone but make jokes throughout. The editing is basic with jump cuts throughout. The theme is set in England where the title confirms that it is an English short film with 'British slang' used. The reason I like this film is how serious the characters are with comedic elements.

3 - The third film is named "Le Chevel 2.1", is a French comedy that is filmed in open fields, lakes, and farms. It has a french narrator describing himself during the film as it plays out, with a very monotone voice and talks about himself "being a horse", and that he is free while it cuts to a variety of wide/medium shots of the open fields. In the end, he makes a joke or being a cow. The music used in the background is a very 1900's type instrumental to match the tone. The tone is very old and it created by using a black and white filter while editing and added a type of grunge effect as well. I really like the shots used and the narration in the background.

4 - This short film is a stop motion video of a tv exploring a living room, the name of the film is named "a tv film" and the camera works consist of multiple still shots of lightly moving objects to create a moving film. There are many sound effects used during this made post-production and then added into the editing to add more depth into the video. The tone of this short film is more catoon-esc than anything else. I like the time and effect they put into this video and also the idea.

5 - The fifth and final short film I thought was brilliant is called "wall" and it shows a close up of a construction worker building a brick wall, then it cuts to a wide shot of the construction worker building multiple of these cylinders made of brick and then gets into the cylinder and covers his head. A very weird/wacky short film that I thought was nice because of the weird idea and the music and how it works perfectly with the video. The lighting used is very natural light and has a very modern theme to it.
